Dressage News from Flyinge CDI in Sweden

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

Emma Hindle and Chequille Z made an incredible debut in the dressage arena while Georgina Somerset went all out to try to qualify for the Young Rider World Cup at the inaugural Flyinge CDI in Sweden.

Emma and the seven-year-old 16.2hh stallion by Caretano Z took second place on a score of more than 71% in the prix st georges behind Holland’s Jeannette Haazen and Nartan. They were then pushed into third place in the intermediaire I as Germany’s Michael Klimke and Bugatti Hilltop just edged ahead of them.

Based at the Brookhouse Stud in Germany, Chequille is registered with the Zangersheide Stud and has huge show jumping potential.

Emma, who broke Chequille in as a 2½-year-old, said: “He spent all his time bucking and was very hot, although never naughty, as a youngster, so he was given to our jumping rider. I only rode Chequille when he couldn’t and then, when he left the yard, I took him back. I am so proud of him. He is definitely a dressage horse now and I am very excited about his future.”

Junior and young rider chief selector Sally Merrison prompted Georgina Somerset, who won team bronze at the 2003 Pony European Championships, to try to qualify for the Young Rider World Cup, which takes place in Frankfurt, Germany, 15-17 December. Competitors send their best two international scores to the World Cup organisers and then wait to hear whether they have qualified for the final. The best seven combined scores will go through.

Georgina and her mother’s 13-year-old 16.2hh stallion Paris, by Prince Thatch, won the young rider team test and freestyle at Hickstead CDIO in the summer. At Flyinge, they finished second in the young rider team test with 67.333%, fourth in the prix st georges and fifth in the freestyle.

Georgina, who is trained by Suzanne Davies, said: “ I don’t think we have pulled it off. We had a bad journey to the show with terrible traffic and it took us 2hrs to get across one border. Paris did well in the team test, but was flat and tired in the PSG. In the freestyle, I made a couple of mistakes, but he went perfectly. I cried when we finished because he had tried his heart out.”
