Fiona Bigwood and Mr G de Lully held their own in world-class company at the Maastricht CDI-W in The Netherlands, 24-25 November 2006.
Fiona, who is based in Germany, had intended to ride Nector van het Carelshof, but he pulled off a shoe just before they were due to leave for the show. Instead, she took the 13-year-old 16.1hh Swedish-bred gelding Mr G de Lully, who was having a few days off after competing at Stuttgart CDI the previous weekend.
Fiona, who finished sixth in the grand prix with 68.083% and 10th on 70.5% in the freestyle, said: “We were totally unprepared. I rode Mr G de Lully at 10pm the night before we left for the show. I had only ridden the freestyle once before and that was over a year ago.”
Belgian-based British rider Wayne Channon was ninth in the grand prix with Lorenzo CH and dropped down to 15th in the freestyle after accidentally performing two pirouettes to the left instead of one on each rein.
Germany’s Isabell Werth and Warum Nicht won both classes with Holland’s Edward Gal and Gribaldi second in the grand prix and third in the freestyle. Also on home ground, Imke Schellekens-Bartels and Sunrise took third in the grand prix and moved up to take the runner-up slot in the freestyle.
