Double Gold for Britain's Drivers

Sunday, September 24, 2006

Britain won both World Championship Gold Medals in the World Singles Driving. As the points were so close after Dressage and Marathon, any penalties in the Cones phase were liable to prove costly. Paul Sidwell with Weirbank John had 11.83, but Cecilia Qvarnstrom with Sveland Marco Bay had 15.55 to drop behind him by 0.22.

Unfortunately David Matthews with Carnwallon Boneddwr had 16.12 resulting in him dropping to 9th place, Bronze going to Germany's Dieter Lauterbach and Rheinprincess. The class was won by Di Hayes and Hamewith Culmellie with the only clear round as a result of which she climbed up to 14th place. Ian Bertram and Hamewith Lonarth had 9.81 and finished in 6th place. GB's team score was 248.76, with the other medals going to Sweden on 255.87 and Germany on 258.31. What a memorable day for the British drivers, their crews and supporters.
