GBR Endurance Elite Squad named for World Equestrian Games
Thursday, February 25, 2010
Endurance GB has announced the elite squad from which they will choose the team to represent Britain at this year’s World Equestrian Games (WEG)
WEG takes place every four years and will be held from 25 September - 10 October in Kentucky, USA. It brings together the world championships of all 8 FEI disciplines – Eventing, Show Jumping, Dressage, Endurance, Reining, Driving, Para-Equestrian and Vaulting. It is the biggest global horse sport event outside the Olympics, and will attract huge international media interest. The organisers expect 600,000 spectators to visit the Kentucky Horse Park for the event.
Final selection of the five rider team to compete for Great Britain at WEG will be in July.
"We have a really talented pool of riders and hope to be sending a strong team to Kentucky," said Jo Claridge, National Chairman of the UK governing body for the sport, Endurance GB. The British Endurance Team needs to raise £120,000 to meet the cost of flying their horses and support crews across the Atlantic, and EGB members are already busy raising funds and seeking sponsors.
Endurance GB has set up a series of non-competitive rides to help raise funds. More than 23 rides are being held throughout the country between now and August, and are open to anyone wanting to experience endurance riding. The Kentucky Rides have been organised by regional Endurance GB groups, covering distances from 10 to 25 miles, to suit all levels of experience. All are open to non-members.
