The park at Burghley House and home to the top international Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials will be the venue for a Course Builders’ Seminar next week. Burghley’s local and renowned course builder Philip Herbert will be the Director of the two-day seminar (5/6 November) organised by the International Academy of Cross Country Design and Build. Last year the course attracted 30 course builders to the venue – from international standard to those just starting out in this more unusual career.
Burghley’s course designer Captain Mark Phillips will take delegates on a walk of his course that runs through the park, to discuss fence construction, safety and design. American designer Eric T Bull will be also be a speaker at the seminar. Eric who runs his own course building company, ETB Equine Construction, in Scottsville, Virginia, is a respected designer and builder in America and has designed some of the most famous courses in the United States including Foxhall, Fair Hill and Southern Pines. His courses are now well known by his trademark carvings that are often incorporated into fences. During the seminar Eric will take a special workshop on carving techniques as well as the construction of portable fences.
“All aspects of the work of design and building cross country courses will be covered and this course should be of much benefit to present designers and those of the future,” said Philip Herbert, who is also a technical advisor to British Eventing the sports governing body. “The discussions that follow should fuse ideas and I hope delegates will go home informed and inspired.”
