EUROPEAN TREC CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE HELD ON EXMOOR

Exmoor has been chosen by The British Horse Society as the venue for the European Open TREC Championships, which will also include the Young Riders Championships. They will be held on September 15 - 17 next year.

TREC, which is closely allied with equestrian tourism, is the newest international discipline in the horse world and is attracting involvement and support from both competitive and leisure riders. The championships will involve teams from eight European countries as well as invited riders from the United States.

The BHS organises the sport in the UK and has appointed local organisers, headed by Margaret Barron, from Minehead, near where the Championships will be held.

National organiser Rob Jones said: "This is a fast-growing sport and the BHS is enthusiastic about staging a European event. We chose Exmoor because it is an area of outstanding natural beauty with a strong equestrian base."

Mrs Barron said: "Local riders and industry, particularly tourism, have welcomed the news and we think there is going to be a great deal of interest in the Championships.

"We plan to accommodate riders and horses with local people and there will be time and opportunity for the visitors from overseas to sample life on Exmoor."

British competitors are taking the challenge seriously, and Mr Jones thinks a national team stands a good chance of finishing in a medal placing.
