War Horse, the play based on the children’s novel of the same name by former children’s laureate, Michael Morpurgo, and adapted for the National Theatre by Nick Stafford is to return to the Olivier Theatre in London for a second season.
Incorporating the World-famous ‘Handspring’ puppets that leave the audience believing live horses are working on the stage, this tear-jerking story is opening young and old audiences to the power of theatre and to the love for a horse.
Riding Master of the Household Cavalry, Major Richard Waygood, says, “Within ten minutes you forget there’s a puppeteer working the horse as it is so realistic and you get carried away by it. It’s very realistic and quite graphic – on the lines of Private Ryan hitting the beach - but I highly recommend War Horse to anyone.”
Booking opened on 16th July for matinee and evening performances for various dates between 10 September and 1st January with special discounts for school and college groups.
Co-director, Tom Morris, says, “What’s extraordinary about the show is that the central character is a non-speaking animal played by a puppet and it is absolutely down to the puppets, to Nick Stafford and the whole of the creative team that this works.”
The story centres around the bond between a young boy named Albert, and his horse, Joey.
When Joey is sold to the cavalry in World War One, Albert determines to find him and bring him home.
Their individual and combined stories pull at the heart-strings and strike home at the relationships of men, horses and a man and his horse.
