Hippisch Hengelo is a major equestrian festival taking place at Expo Center, Hengelo, in the east of the Netherlands. Running from 28 November to 9 December, it includes national and international jumping, national dressage, driving, an auction of elite young horses, and displays. Spectators could purchase a season ticket for only €45.

The CSIJYP Category A ran from 30 November to 2 December and the course designer was Marc Kasius. The 1st class was the Hippisch Hengelo Prijs, a 1.35m Table A for Young Riders. 13 of the 27 starters went clear in the 1st round, and 6 of them went clear again in the jump-off. The winner (€170) was Ireland's Enda Carroll with Iraca de Laco MBE (11-year-old bay SF gelding by Oberon du Moulin, out of a mare by Ruffian) whose time of 34.69 was 0.73 faster than that of the home nation's Nuri Dijks with Armani (grey KWPN stallion by Darco out of Lamellie, a mare by Animo). Chris Smith with Power (10-year-old bay KWPN gelding by Polydox) went clear in 47.70 which earned 4th place (€90). Georgie Strutton on Ross Towner finished 25th with 12 faults and James Hughes on Retsina H was eliminated. Ireland's Declan McEvoy on Triest Star had 4 faults and finished 20th.

The Zwolle International Prijs was a 1.30m Table A for Juniors, offering €130 to the winner. 11 of the 41 starters went clear in the 1st round, and 4 of them, all from the Netherlands, went clear again in the jump-off. Fastest by 0.90 were Sjaak Sleiderink and Chopard (formerly called Ultaire B, a 6-year-old bay KWPN gelding by Manhattan, out of Olivia B, a mare by Concorde). Henry Lacey on Fruhlingtest had 8 faults and finished 29th, and Jodie Ward on Norolientje was among the 3 to be eliminated.

Next was another Hippisch Hengelo Prijs, this time a 1.15m for Pony Riders, offering a 1st prizeof €110. 13 of the 41 starters went clear in the 1st round, and 8 were clear again in the jump-off. Again the winner was from the host nation: Bas Knijff with Chaplin (10-year-old NRPS gelding by Carl) who was quickest by 0.58. There were no British competitors. For Ireland, Robert Harrison on Mosstown Jigsaw (6-year-old Irish-bred piebald gelding) had 8 faults in 38.62, finishing 13th; Jessica Burke on Cottage Flight had 4 faults in 70.10 and finished 19th; Stephen Moore on Diablo Bleu had 4 faults in 73.46 and finished 25th; and Michael Duffy on Annagowan Arrow had 9 faults in 79.53 and finished 36th.

The Expo Talent Prijs (1.35m) was a 1-rounder for Junior Riders, in which 5 of the 49 starters went clear. All of them were from the Netherlands. Ruben Romp with Ontario (11-year-old bay KWPN gelding by Concorde, out of a mare by Purioso) took the 1st prize of €140; they were 1.90 quicker than their nearest rivals. Henry Lacey on Cardoso 12 had 4 faults in 68.80 and finished 15th; Claire Bailey on FAN Piz Palu had 8 faults in 82.99 and finished 32nd; and Jodie Ward on Caloux Z retired. For Ireland, James Brennan on LB Galileo had 5 faults in 69.33 and finished 16th; Mili McIntyre on Vrenske Drum van het Juxschot had 10 faults in 75.44 and finished 38th; Jessica Burke on Amanda 202 had 14 faults in 67.46 and finished 43rd.

The Outdoor Gelderland Prijs was a 1.25m 1-rounder for Pony Riders, in which 18 of the 40 starters went clear. It was another win for the home country, 1st prize (€125) going to Jody van Gerwen with Tequila-Sunrise (13-year-old gelding of unknown breeding) whose time of 57.43 was fastest by 0.27. Ireland's Robert Harrison with Mosstown Saoirs (9-year-old bay Irish-bred mare) took 5th (€40) with the time of 61.52. Claire Bailey with Midwest Star (70.59) finished 18th. Jessica Burke on European Clover (66.18), James Brennan on Ashfield Village (67.46) and Michael Duffy with Silver Shadow (67.73) were 11th, 12th and 13th; George Murphy on The Freckle (8 faults in 70.52) was 29th; Lauren Haire on Miss Ennis (11 faults in 83.82) was equal 30th.

The HEMA Hengelo Prijs was a 1.40m 1-rounder for Young Riders, offering €190 to the winner. Only 3 of the 28 starters went clear. It resulted in another win for Enda Carroll, this time with Nike Z (9-year-old chestnut Zangersheide mare by Oslo de Rave, out of a mare by Narew), whose time of 65.34 was a remarkable 4.54 quicker than that of the runner-up, though 6 of the 4-faulters were even faster. Georgie Strutton with the scopey Wonderboy III (8-year-old grey BWP gelding by Flamenco de Semilly) had a single time fault in 72.76 and took 4th (€95). James Hughes on Cassius Clay II (formerly ridden by Geoff Billington), had 14 faults in 79.59 and finished 19th; Chris Smith on Dozent had 15 faults in 81.78 and finished 20th. Declan McEvoy on Oscar had 20 faults in 70.20 and finished 25th.

Saturday morning began with the Hippisch Hengelo Prijs, a Table C Take-Your-Own-Line (1.30m-1.40m) for Young Riders and Juniors, which had 42 starters. The 1st prize of €260 went to Laura Spekenbrink with Chellonya Z (7-year-old bay Zangersheide mare by Chellano Z, out of Donya, a mare by Lector) whose time of 41.29 was 0.42 faster than that of their nearest rivals. Chris Smith and Power were round in 52.70, which was good enough for 12th (€40). Henry Lacey on Fruhlingtest (90.62) was 42nd. Declan McEvoy on Triest Star (55.72) was 16th.

Next came a 1.15m 1-rounder for Pony Riders, offering €130 to the winner. 9 of the 38 starters went clear, the fastest of them being Sweden's Louise Widmark with Mabel (13-year-old chestnut mare). Their time of 47.78 was 1.47 quicker than that of the runner-up. Michael Duffy on Annagowan Arrow had 4 faults in 48.88 and finished 11th; Robert Harrison on Mosstown Saoirs had 4 faults in 51.71 and finished 16th; Jessica Burke on Cottage Flight had 8 faults in 49.28 and finished 22nd; Stephen Moore on Diablo Bleu was among the 8 competitors to be eliminated.

The BMC Prijs was a 1.35m 1-rounder for Juniors, in which 18 of the 54 starters went clear. From the 9th draw, Belgium's Jessica Geurts with Cherry Pie (10-year-old grey Holsteiner mare by Coriano, out of a mare by Acobat I) with the time of 56.10 overtook Laura Spekenbrink with Minardi (14-year-old black KWPN gelding by Holland, out of Rozalina, a mare by Hanassi) by 0.15 to take the 1st prize of €290. Near the end, their position was under threat from Dutchman Hendrik-Jan Schuttert and Eurocommerce Agadir, who were round in 55.06, but incurred 4 faults. James Brennan with LB Galileo (13-year-old grey Rheinlander gelding by Grandeur, out of Gladis, a mare by Orthos), a former ride of Marion Hughes, earned 3rd place (€210) with the time of 57.19. Claire Bailey with FAN Piz Palu (15-year-old bay Westfalien mare by Polydor, out of Betty, a mare by Bengale) was 12th (€50) in 63.06. Jodie Ward on Calouz Z had 19 faults in 79.75, finishing 52nd. Jessica Burke on Amanda 202 had 12 faults in 62.07 and finished 48th.

The Van Gansewinkel Prijs (1.25) was a 2-phase for Ponies, which offered €200 to the winner. 24 of the 43 starters had 1st-phase clears and 17 remained clear in the 2nd. Jody van Gerwen with Tequila-Sunrise were the early leaders but just past the halfway mark, another Dutch rider, Frank Schuttert, with Golden Eye (12-year-old dark bay gelding) went 0.75 faster (27.17). Near the end, Sweden's Erica Swartz with Sunny 93 (13-year-old bay mare by Zandheuvells Sunny Boy, out of a mare by Brillant), stopped the clock at 27.28 to take 2nd place (€170). Claire Bailey with Midwest Star (18-year-old grey mare) was 11th (€40) in 33.28. Jessica Burke with European Clover (29.06) came 6th, and Robert Harrison with Mosstown Jigsaw (32.54) was 10th, earning €40 each. James Brennan with Ashfield Village had 4 faults in 36.71 and finished 21st. George Murphy on The Freckle had 4 faults in 48.04 in the 1st phase, finishing 28th; Lauren Haire on Miss Ennis had 4 faults in 49.13, finishing 30th; and Michael Duffy on Silver Shadow had 4 faults in 50.77, finishing 33rd.

The RVG Woningen Prijs (1.40m) was for Young Riders, and 7 of the 29 starters went clear in the 1st round. Enda Carroll with Nike Z finished 8th (€50) with a single time fault. James Hughes on Cassius Clay II had 16 faults and finished 23rd. Declan McEvoy on Oscar had 18 faults and finished 25th. Opening the jump-off, Belgium's Jody Bosteels with Nina Droeshout (10-year-old chestnut SBS mare by Tenor Manciais, out of Elise de Chenemont, a mare by Nicias III) set a fine standard, going clear in 30.88, which earned them 2nd prize (€400). Next in were Georgie Strutton with Karen Walker's Wonderboy III and their clear in 34.86 took 5th place (€100). The home country's Maaike Nijhof with Volvo's Oswin (11-year-old bay KWPN stallion by Holland, out of Zarin VIII, a mare by Lord) were also clear, their time of 35.38 taking 6th (€50). Another Dutch rider, Joel Hamoen, with One Night Pleasure WH (11-year-old bay KWPN gelding by Lord Z, out of Gold, a mare by Concorde) went clear in 33.80, earning 4th prize (€200). His compatriot, Jack Ansems with VDL Groep Camara (9-year-old bay Zangersheide mare by Calvaro Z, out of a mare by Schalkhaar) went clear in 33.40, taking 3rd place (€300). Nuri Dijks with Armani went well into the lead with the time of 30.88 which secured the 1st prize of €500. Last to go was Chris Smith with Dozent (9-year-old black Oldenburg gelding by Donatelli, out of a mare by Classiker) and with 10 faults in 44.23 they finished 7th (€50).

Sunday featured a Grand Prix for each of the three age groups, and in order to qualify, the ponies and horses had to have had 12 or fewer faults in at least one of their Big Tour classes on the preceding days. The starting order was in reverse order of their results in Saturday's classes.

The Divoza Prijs (1.25m) was for the 16-&-under riders, and offered €600 to the winner. 11 of the 42 competitors went clear in the 1st round. Opening the jump-off, Denmark's 15-year-old Nanna Dyrvig Lykke with Mozart 82 (17-year-old bay DRP stallion by Marquis AA, out of Dorina, a mare by Faruk) went clear in 34.83, which earned 4th place (€250). 13-year-old Michael Duffy on Silver Shadow (9-year-old grey Connemara stallion by Cloonisle Cashel, out of Poetic Moonlight) were 1.62 slower and took 6th place. From the home country 14-year-old Glenn Knoester with Prima Donna (10-year-old bay NRPS mare of unknown breeding) had 15 faults in 60.75 and took 11th place. 16-year-old James Brennan with Ashfield Village (10-year-old grey Irish-bred stallion) had 4 faults in 39.15, finishing 10th. Maurice Tebbel (13-year-old son of German international Rene Tebbel) with Giovanni 172 (10-year-old chestnut gelding by Top Nonstop, out of a mare by Marsvogel) produced what proved to be the victorious performace, clear in 32.10. Denmark's 14-year-old Alexandra Sisseck with Top Jezabel de l'Etape (10-year-old chestnut mare by Randcho, out of Raquette, a mare by Besbes) were clear in 34.99, and finished 5th (€200). Victoria Gulliksen (15-year-old daughter of Norwegian international Geir "Jimmy" Gulliksen) with Bettize de la Boverie (10-year-old bay BWP mare by Norton de la Boverie, out of Pretty Girl) went clear in 34.32 and took 3rd prize (€350). 16-year-old Claire Bailey and Midwest Star were clear in 37.09, taking 7th place. 15-year-old Charlotte Verhagen, from the Netherlands, with Balou (19-year-old chestnut gelding of unknown breeding) had 4 faults in 37.58 and finished 9th. 15-year-old Jessica Burke with European Clover (6-year-old chestnut Irish-bred gelding by White Clover) went into 2nd place (€475) with a clear in 32.19. Last to go was 16-year-old Erica Swartz with Sunny 93, and 4 faults in 32.41 resulted in 8th place. Those placed 6th to 11th won €125 each. Robert Harrison on Mosstown Saoirs had 4 faults in the 1st round and finished 14th; George Murphy on The Freckle and Lauren Haire on Miss Ennis had 8 faults and were 28th and 30th.

The Anemone Horse Trucks (1.40m) was for the 18-&-under riders. 11 of the 52 starters went clear in the 1st round. Henry Lacey on Cardoso 12 had 4 faults and finished 28th. Mili McIntyre on Vrenske Drum van het Juxschot had 4 faults and finished 23rd; James Brennan on LB Galileo had 8 faults and finished 34th; Jessica Burke on Amanda 202 had 12 faults and finished 41st. Opening the jump-off for the host nation was 16-year-old Doron Kuipers with Lissabon (10-year-old bay gelding by Lagranno) who had 8 faults in 44.29 and finished 10th. 16-year-old Anna-Julia Kontio from Finland, with Eafons Escape (9-year-old chestnut Hannoverian mare by Espri, out of a mare by Golf Club) went clear in 42.72, which earned 5th place (€200). 17-year-old Linn Widmark from Sweden, with Barquard (11-year-old bay Holsteiner gelding by Banual XX, out of a mare by Landego) went clear in 42.40, and took 4th place (€350). 17-year-old Lars Grafmüller from Germany, with Lance 16 (9-year-old bay Westfalien gelding by Lanero NRW, out of a mare by Pilot) had 4 faults in 40.69, and finished 6th. Belgium's Lennart van Vlaenderen with Playboy van de Somme (15-year-old bay BWP gelding by Sir de Verneuil XX, out of Wodiena, a mare by Alme) had 12 faults in 48.23, which put them in 11th place. 17-year-old Alexander Kernebeck from Germany, with Quick Star 16 (7-year-old bay gelding by Quick Star, out of a mare by Grannus) went clear in 37.55, which earned 2nd place (€630). Belgium's Olivier Philippaerts (one of Ludo's 14-year-old twin sons) with Splendid van de Heffinck (12-year-old chestnut BWP gelding by Heartbreaker, out of Kurioso, a mare by Pachat II) had 4 faults in 50.84,and finished 9th. The Dutch pair of 15-year-old Rob van Grunsven with Rehoboth B (9-year-old bay KWPN gelding by Elcaro, out of Ganea, a mare by Maykel) had 4 faults in 41.51 and finished 7th. Claire Bailey with FAN Piz Palu had 4 faults in 47.52 and took 8th place. Victoria Gulliksen with Flower Power (8-year-old bay SWB mare by Cardento, out of Comtesse Fleur, a mare by Nepal) went clear in 41.05, earning 3rd place (€490). Last to go was another Dutch duo: 18-year-old Anouk Schreurs with Caprilli's Time To Beat (12-year-old bay KWPN gelding by Holland, out of a mare by Blanc Rivage) and they produced a clear round in 36.08 to take the 1st prize of €780. Those placed 6th to 11th received €150 each.

The Dierenkliniek Emmeloord Prijs (1.45m) was for the 21-&-under riders. Only 2 of the 25 starters went clear. 3rd place (€780) went to Jody Bosteels with Nina Droeshout, who had the fastest time of the 5 competitors with 4 faults. Georgie Strutton on Wonderboy III had 8 faults and finished 10th. Enda Carroll retired Nike Z. The 1st to go was a 19-year-old lady from the Netherlands, Beau Vos with Popas (10-year-old bay KWPN gelding by Topas, out of a mare by Le Val Blanc) and they accumulated 16 faults in 37.64. Chris Smith with Dozent had 8 faults in 42.81 and so won the 1st prize of €1,280, with Beau winning €1,080. 19-year-old Chris comes from Mottram, Hyde in Cheshire, and is one of a group of promising young riders (which also includes Georgie Strutton and Henry Lacey), receiving training from Steven Smith.

Monday's auction featured 21 horses aged between 4 and 6, which had been selected by Jerome Dubbeldam, and 2 of the Schröder brothers, Gerco and Wim. For the 2nd consecutive year the top price was paid for a son of Hors La Loi II: Versace, a 5-year-old gelding (out of Riviera, a mare by Concorde), who was bought for €180,000 by Bennie Holtkamp and Albert Jansen for Jeroen Dubbeldam. Albert Jansen, who is the chairman of BMC, also paid €74,000 for a 6-year-old mare, Ramona (by Baldini), for Ben Schröder. 5 horses fetched over €100,000, and the average price exceeded €70,000.
