COMPETITION

For this months competition we have two training videos from Laura Bechtolsheimer to give away courtesy of horsehero.com.

The youngest rider to win the National Dressage Championships and to represent Great Britain at dressage, Laura made her Olympic debut in 2008.

The videos have been put together from a collection of shorter clips introducing her young horses and demonstrating various stages of their early education, from long reining to collection, from lateral work to piaffe.

The clips are laid back and friendly in nature, you do not feel like you are being lectured to or trained, rather you are simply present in the Bechtolsheimer yard watching, while Lucy and Dr Bechtolsheimer chat to you about what work they are doing with the horses at the time. With clear descriptions as they talk about the movements themselves and explanations of why they do what they do, the videos cannot fail to give you a better understanding about the training of a dressage horse whether or not you aspire to compete.

Indeed one of the most important points they bring out is that all horses are different and must be allowed to progress at their own pace without undue pressure or asking for too much too soon.

Laura Bechtolsheimer says, “By showing the work we do with our lovely horses we aim to share our learning and experience with those who want to progress their horses in a sensitive and understanding way. Being open about our methods and the training philosophy (which I share with my father), is a key part of the videos. I hope our openness is appreciated and that by including the less than perfect moments, we can show in a more realistic way how to work through problems with horses and achieve greater harmony."

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the videos and having now met Lucys young horses I shall be looking out for them in the future.
